Frank Decorah - finally!!!

So far, in York's Decorah Security series, Frank Decorah has been the mysterious head of the firm, matching the unique paranormal abilities of his agents to the cases to be solved. ON EDGE enlightens us about the man himself and the impetus behind his decision to form Decorah Security. We meet him as an amputee in Bethesda's Naval Medical Center, wondering about his future now that the loss of his leg has ended his career in the military. In the dark hours of the morning he is confronted with circumstances that make him doubt his sanity: a pair of women, one whose goal is to drain the life force from a fellow patient, the other to prevent the murder. Needless to say, they are not nurses assigned to his unit, or anywhere else in this reality. In an attempt to make sense of what he witnessed as well as to help save his friend's life, Decorah finds himself in an otherworldly domain and falling in love with a woman pledged to forces determined to keep them apart. York handles this scenario with her usual deft plotting, mastery of characterization and sensual love scenes and kept me reading from the very top. It was satisfying to get to know the mysterious Frank Decorah.

Who is Frank Decorah!

Rebecca York explains the mysterious Frank Decorah in this short story. She doesn't disappoint us in her paranormal details and I ADORE Ariel, Frank's "soul-mate" from the "other side". This is another great read by this wonderful author. She NEVER disappoints me :)

I love the Decorah Security series and this book features the origin of how Frank Decorah came to
find his talent. After losing a leg in battle, he is taken to a hospital with others that survived and one
night, another patient calls to him for help and is confronted by a lady of darkness and he is saved
by a mysterious angel. A wonderful story about the head and founder of the Decorah Security and
ex-Navy SEAL, Frank Decorah and the lady that steals his heart. Must read and get the other books
in the Decorah Security collection!

Permission to believe

If nothing else, this was such a fun read! But this book is more than merely that. What I appreciated the most about the author's approach and voice in this book is that though there's a fair amount of "woo" talked about, the way she portrays the ideas were very much grounded in the material world, and far from esoteric. It makes someone like me keep from discounting the ideas, or perhaps more importantly, her delivery style seemed to give me PERMISSION to believe and to finally drop my gen-x bred cynicism without fear of what happens if I give up control; that it's okay and SAFE to be a girl and want love.

Excellent "Man"ual on how to manifest love!

Debbianne DeRose's How I Met the Man of My Dreams: a Guide to MANifesting Yours is an uplifting, practical, and (very) humorous guide to manifesting love in your life. This Jersey girl on a spiritual path has walked her talk in her own journey of finding a soul-mate, and uses her adventures (and mis-adventures) in the dating realm to help others to find their true love. Also, like a good cosmic tour-guide, DeRose explains "woo woo" concepts of manifestation (which work for anything, not just finding love) in very down-to-earth terms that stuck with me long after reading the book. If you are looking for love and feeling discouraged or overwhelmed, I can't recommend this book enough!

I've already found the man of my dreams, but I still enjoyed reading this book because a) it's hilarious and b) there are a lot of good ideas for how to make your life what you want it to be, even if that doesn't involve finding love.

I read Debbianne's other book first and enjoyed it so much I decided to read this one too. And like the last book, I found the final chapter of this one to be a powerful denouement that shows how *after* she found the lover of her dreams, all was not necessarily a bed of roses. She shows how she was getting in her own way, and how she stepped aside to allow the relationship to flourish.

I'm hoping her next book follows up on these ideas by depicting more of how she continues to live the life of her dreams with the man of her dreams.

What good is a workbook without an answer key?

I bought this book because I am taking a business basics course for attorneys and we had to learn basic accounting. Our professor went through the concepts very quickly with only a couple of examples. I bought this book because of the included workbook. There is no answer key, so I have no way to tell if I am learning the concepts correctly. Without an answer key, the workbook is totally useless!

Reading it again...

I first read The Clan of the Cave Bear as a young teenager who was bored during summer vacation. I also had a pension for reading very thick books because I thought they had more character development. I loved it and have read it many times since that summer. I've also read the last book this year while I had foot surgery and I was basically bed-ridden for 3 wks. I do love the characters and how the author shows the progression of how things were possibly figured out (ie taming animals, the spear thrower, fire-rocks, etc) by early humans. I also love the spiritualism and rituals. I would only say that if you read the series from book 1 to the last, what gets tiresome is the repeated references and explanations of every single plant, herb and medicine over and over and over again. I also grew tired of the endless descriptions of the caves and that song that was sung in the last book, the Land of the Painted Caves. I actually got to where I skipped over it totally. It was almost like the author was trying to fulfill a total page number quota by using this song to fill up page after page. I use to do that in college for 10 page essays.
I was also disappointed that Jondalar did the unthinkable and hurt Ayala so badly. I'm trying not to give away the only actual contrived drama in the last book. All in all, they are good reads. They make the mind think about what it could have been like, if people like Jondalar and Ayala had ever lived. Just skip over the parts that make you slightly narcoleptic.

Favorite Series of all!

The details around the time and place are incredible. They add to the realism and you can almost smell and taste everything. It is both a blessing and a curse. Sometimes it gets in the way and it feels like too much detail. However you learn to skim-over when you want to, so it is not that big of an issue. The story around Ayla and Jondalar is amazing! I am rereading the series for the 3rd time and each time I find new things (which I never would have believed because I thought I got it right the first time). My kids (teenagers) would love these books, and someday I will let them enjoy reading them (Ayla's and Jondalar's love life is a little to detailed for young readers IMO).

Make sure you have time, because once you start, you can't stop!

Very Engaging and Informative

I was engaged in this series for about 9 months. I don't have a lot of time to read, so it took a while to finish, but when I got to the end, I was sad it was over. I will say it started to lose momentum toward the end which is kind of like life -- we grow old and feeble and then don't mind dying quite so much. I gave it 5 stars, but I'm going to check other reviews after writing this to see if anyone else was disappointed that the story was more linear than circular. By that I mean, I expected that the life and child left behind in the first book would come together as part of the plot by the end of the story. And that the main character's lineage or identity would be discovered. I hate loose ends even if it serves reality better. I learned a great deal about a time in history I knew nothing about -- the ice age. I realize much was conjecture, but the author did her homework and bought to life a time that most of us don't much think about. I found interesting even the descriptions of herbs used for medicines and landscapes and animals -- none of it got boring. The only page skipping I did was the sex scenes that went on and on with an explicitness that I could have done without. Not a good book for young people only because of this. There is some serious brutality, including rape of a child that is pretty upsetting, but this fell within the description of a culture that was very different from ours. To have avoided it would not have made sense. Yet, the book brought out the commonality of human beings of all ages. We see what the need for acceptance does to people, we see the givers and takers and those who have the courage to be different. We see jealousy, power mongers, and the timeless values of compassion, strength, and character. I will read it again at some point, minus the explicit sex.
