Perfect for GTC/DC Cupcakes Fans

I have followed DC Cupcakes religiously and have ordered the cupcakes for shipping numerous times. This cookbook is indeed heartwarming and there are lots from their actual memoirs. There are also numerous recipes for some of their best cupcakes, including Red Velvet, Pumpkin Spice, and Cherry Blossom. They also have several recipes that were exclusive to their show.

Overall, I'm so glad I bought this. My only criticism is that I wish it was organized better. I wish there was a list of all the recipes and the corresponding page number because you do have to look through the entire book to find the recipe or go hunting in the back index, which includes everything else too.

The only recipe I've made so far is the Salted Caramel. It came out well but the recipe made 24 cupcakes instead of 12. I've never seen a cookbook off by that much (and I am using standard size cupcake pans!). Though I guess making more is better than making less!

However, I highly suggest this book. If you're looking for a certain recipe/cupcake, leave me a comment and I'll check to see if the book has it!

He is the founder and president of Leadership Communication, a coaching and consulting company with clients that include CEOs, senior public officials, and elected leaders. A Voice in the Wilderness

As a professional communication consultant, and former White House speechwriter, I've read perhaps a baker's dozen books on executive communication. It's a faceted field, and some aspects are well-represented in the selection of books available.
But to my mind none has addressed the central need for (and subtle complexities of accessing) truth and heart in business rhetoric with simple clarity -- until this little volume appeared. It's been around awhile and is still a gem.
Terry Pearce teaches communication at UC Berkeley's business school (with side trips to the London School of Business and various corporate gigs), and he's spent time in the trenches at IBM. Perhaps he's best known for his work with Schwab CEO and co-chairman Dave Pottruck (see "Clicks & Mortar," a book they co-wrote). His graceful braiding of theory and practice, and clean style brimming with examples, make this a fluid read that sticks in the mind.
Pearce digs beyond style into substance, and even deeper, into conviction. As a writer who routinely interviews CEOs in hopes of helping them frame their thoughts, I daily encounter this core question: How do you coax and excavate substance from your client, and frame it with authenticity? Pearce spills the tools and techniques of how he does it. If you fret about making your speaker believable -- if you want to craft language that does more than disappear in the pool of rhetoric with scarce a ripple to show for it -- in other words, if you want to help folks communicate in a believable, sustainable way that makes a difference -- that's 'leadership communication.' And this book can help set you on the right road.
Sadly, most corporate speeches are forgettable. Maybe because most speakers are afraid to speak from the gut? If you intend to help raise the level of your own message, or your clients, this one's worth your time.

Business coach Terry Pearce teaches you how to put the personal perspective back into your professional communications. With a credible and authoritative voice, he explains how authentic human connection is missing from today's communications, even though people crave it, especially as they evaluate who they trust to lead them through rapid change. He maintains that leaders who communicate authentically and passionately will inspire loyalty and make their mark. While Pearce is clearly convinced about the importance of inspiring your constituents, the pace of his book won't exactly move your spirit. He walks you slowly and carefully through the discipline he uses to help clients rediscover their authentic voices and craft messages that resonate. His corporate and political client list is quite select, but we find his communication strategies relevant for anyone who is leading change - whether you are building a small community or a large company.

Solid advice on communicating

A speaker may be able to wow an audience with technique and entertainment, but if everyone walks out the door unchanged, than the speaker is not a leader. The speaker who truly engages an audience and makes them think about themselves, their roles, their company or their country is rare indeed. To engage an audience on this level, you must have true conviction in what you say. At the heart of leadership is the ability to tap your own values and experiences and communicate them to others. Audiences today have grown much more cynical. They can detect falsehood from the back of the hall. Authenticity is the only thing that will reach them anymore. Terry Pearce has the following advice for people who need to improve speaking skills, and communicate effectively as leaders.

· Discover what matters to you. Uncover your values. Make sure that you don't say anything in your speech that contradicts your core values.

· Create a structure for your speech with a beginning, middle and end.

· Use data effectively. Whenever possible, use specific information rather than talking generally. Use examples.

· Use your personal experiences to connect with your audience.

I grew up in small town Iowa and after moving to a much larger city, returned to our family cabin in the woods in order to finish a Master's Degree and do a little writing.  What I found was that people are different in rural America.  I knew it before, but didn't realize to what extent that was true.  They have everything going for them, plus they know what it is to live in a community where you can leave your doors unlocked during the day, let your children walk to school by themselves, have people show up to help simply because they are your neighbors and they pay attention to each other.

The Bellingwood series pours out of me with stories from my childhood and youth filling the pages as the characters come alive in my mind.  These characters are amalgamations of people I've known my entire life ... good people with great stories.

There are a lot of great people in this world and it doesn't take that much to find them if you just open your eyes and your heart.  Bellingwood reminds us of that fact.

A great series...with one caveat

I have read 10 of the books in this series. Overall, these are great stories. The group of friends expands and creates a true community, and the author really knows her way around renovation work, which is interesting. The biggest flaw in this series is actually the main character. Polly could have been a wonderfully drawn; instead she's so "perfect" that reading about her is just irritating. She'll take on anything, she rescues both people and animals, she works tirelessly, blah, blah, blah. When she stops to take a breath, it's so the other characters can tell her how wonderful she is. If someone doesn't live up to her standards, she jumps in to set them straight. It's like the author is intermittently serving some undefined agenda, because the rest of her writing is balanced and entertaining. However, I've realized that I too can adopt the Polly Bootstrap Mentality. I don't have to read those passages, so I take charge of my own life and skip them.

Most of the narrative is worth it; when Polly is being a mere human, the dialogue can be laugh-out-loud funny. The character, Beryl, is a outlandish and fun. Lydia has some of the same attributes as Polly, but Lydia is written realistically, so she's also an enjoyable character. As cozy series go, it's definitely worth a try, especially if you have Kindle Unlimited.

I was intrigued by the description but ...

I took a chance on this book because it was free and because the description intrigued me. I wanted to know what was found, why, and all the details.

I have met and known some of the types of characters in this book. The author is correct. These types of people DO exist. However, I have moved to many small towns all over the country throughout my life, sometimes by myself and I have NEVER had the world change for me. It would be wonderful if people actually acted like they do in this book but they just don't. People don't put their entire lives on hold for several weeks while they lavish the new person with dinners, parties, etc.

The basic plot was a good one but interjecting the character of Joey, an unrelated character that really had nothing to do with the original plot was a bit unsettling. And then to receive the same reaction from the town after the Joey issue was resolved just didn't ring true. I can believe a couple of people -- maybe a new girlfriend and a guy with a twinge of interest in dating you -- would feel normal but not a whole town.

I gave the book 2 stars because of the original plot but beyond that, I can't give it more. I will pass on more books by this author.

I love the stories

I love the stories; it is quite like my experience growing up in the rural Midwest, but quite honestly I don't know why I continued through all 14 of the books. My problem with the series is the main character. The people around her are lovely, but I've seldom encountered such a juvenile personality in someone who is supposed to be nearly forty years old. Everything is about her. She whines and cries every time someone disagrees with her, "volunteers" to do all manner of things, then whines some more because she has too much to do and her life is "out of control". Of course, the things she volunteers to do are usually done by someone else. I just wish the author would have her grow up.

A Nice Overview

This book was well organized and did a good job of covering Churchill's life and accomplishments from birth until death. It wasn't a "work of art" in terms of writing, but that's precisely the point of a series like this--to give readers the best overview of a topic without all the padding. All in all it's a pretty good little book. I think it would have been better if there had been references at the end, but still worth a look for anyone interested in Winston Churchill or History in general.

Excellent and Concise

If you are a history enthusiast, a student, or just looking to expand your knowledge, this is an excellent book for you. The book follows the life and career of Winston Churchill. While he was a well-known public figure throughout England and the world, this gives details of his early life, personal life, and military history. If you do not know much about this man, this is an excellent start to learning about who he was.

Straightforward Overview

This book accomplishes its objective; to provide the reader with the essential aspects of Winston Churchill's like and work. I suspect that like most readers I am most familier with Churchill's exploits during WWII. However, what I found most interesting and surprising was how his pre-war career was marked by successes as well as some dismal failures. Churchill's life was very colorful, and the author touches on all of the main points in simple, clear, balanced prose.
However, there is no context or perspective provided. I realize this is a "Very Brief History" and recognize the space limitations that this imposes. I would have liked to see a few more paragraphs describing political motivations, overall philosophies and even family relationships. Without even brief paragraphs about these issues, the reader is left wondeering if Churchill was a political opportunist, unapologetic imperialist, and a hugh egotist. I"ll have to read other books to get even a flavor of these questions.
