Elena Palmer i a renowned German journalist with Russian origins. Her historic novel "Peter III. Der Prinz von Holstein" was first released in Germany by Sutton Publishing on 2005. The book became a bestseller, received lots of critical acclaim and began a change in the public perception about the king, it led to many Germans expressing pride and gratitude about his legacy.
2005-2010 Palmer gave hundreds of lectures worldwide including major US universities and New York Public Library. She produced several TV documentaries and appeared on CNN's Ones To Watch on July 2010.  
Back in Germany Palmer established the Czar’s association with the purpose to create, conceive, develop, deliver and manage a palette of stage, screen, TV, text and any other media and entertainment products worldwide dedicated and related to Russian Czar Peter III. 2014 German government, convinced by major public movement initiated by Palmer’s work, erected a monument for Peter III in his city of birth - the first monument in his honor in the world. Second monument is ready to be erected in St.-Petersburg. A production of the Musical "Czar" has began.
Thus after 250 years the Emperor finally gets his official public rehabilitation, or Rebirth.
This English edition is extended and supplemented through newer results of ongoing research.

Two wrongs don't make right.

Having written a biography of Peter III (Peter-the-not-so-great) which accepted uncritically the slanders which his rivals circulated against him, the author has redressed this injustice by writing a new biography which asserts that the truth must be exactly the opposite. Unfortunately, the opposite of a lie may still be wrong. It is no doubt true that Peter was not as stupid, drunk, or inept as a violinist as Catherine the Great said, and yet, it is exceedingly difficult to make a case that he was a good husband and a wise and capable czar. He was in love with Frederick the Great, dressed in a Prussian uniform, surrounded himself with Holsteiners, and was ready to hand his country (Russia) over to Prussia. It took him nine years to consummate his marriage to Catherine the Great, if he ever did, and his public conduct tended to the erratic and perverse. He had many good and progressive ideas, mostly in imitation of Frederick the Great, and Catherine later endorsed or adopted some of them, but converting Russia to a mere colony of Prussia would have been a gross treason. This is not a carefully written biography, with many ambiguous or simply wrong sentences. Kyrill Razumovsky arrested and imprisoned his own father? Or was that supposed to be Ivan Naryshkin, his father in law? Some of the important dates are incorrect, such as the death of Nikolai Teplov. People did not hang rats to ward off the plague. Indeed, they sometimes hanged cats on the theory that they were familiars of the devil. The motivations attributed to Peter's enemies are far-fetched. It is mere libel to state that Catherine sent Gregorii Orlov to Moscow during the plague in the hope that he would catch it and die. In fact, he cleaned up Moscow, ended the plague, and returned to St. Petersburg in triumph. This book is more like campaign rhetoric than history.

Powerful American Tragicomedy

Steinbeck resists the pessimistic strain that runs through much 20th-century literature of alienation and despair. His is essentially a positive, "comic" vision in that he affirms the human community, all the more so if it comprises outcasts and eccentrics who reject the conventions and materialist values of the dominant culture in favor of the more "natural" as well as mystic order represented by Doc. Mack and the boys, along with most of the other inhabitants of Cannery Row, embody a democratic, inclusive social order founded on genuine diversity--of character and lifestyle more than color, ethnicity, or religion. In fact, they have much in common with the lovable and vital mischief makers of Shakespeare's King Henry IV plays, though Steinbeck's Doc cannot bring himself to be as heartless as Shakespeare's Prince Hal. Falstaff and company are allowed to remain in Steinbeck's version. They're as essential to the vitality and strength of the human community as the debris that contributes to the cycle of life represented by the tide pools.

One striking example of Steinbeck's worldview is the automobile. Unlike Fitzgerald's symbol of American aspiration and status, of danger and tragedy, Steinbeck's machine is distinguished by the working symmetry of its parts and by its relation to resourceful, inventive human beings capable of adapting and modifying it to their own purposes--which aren't primarily selfish but directed toward the survival and celebration of the community which it serves. Gay's mechanical expertise inspires the narrator in Chapter 11 to proclaim: "Two generations of Americans knew more about the Ford coil than the ..., about the planetary system of gears than the solar system of stars. With the Model T, part of the concept of private property disappeared."

Chapter 18, it strikes me, contains some of the best writing in all of Steinbeck. Doc, like Steinbeck, is a collector of specimens, but the sight of a dead girl that confronts him here discourages any action associated with acquisition or even representation. It's an expanded, mystical moment in which the author manages to suggest the inextricable relation between life and death, the suspension of the narrative matching the reader's wonder and amazement before a universe that surpasses human understanding.

It's a rather utopian view, or cosmos, but Steinbeck makes it work while aligning himself with forbears like Whitman, Twain, and Sandburg--all of whom drew inspiration from the American community as a microcosm of life and nature, rooted in a deep belief in the sanctity of life and the inherent capacity of human beings for kindness and tolerance. "Our Father who art in Nature" is the narrator's invocation in the second chapter, and the story that follows reveals this Creative Spirit's unlikely incarnations in everyday experience and the natural world.

Throughout the final chapters, the theme of community counterbalances an equal emphasis on the tragic and the elegiac. Even as Mack and company finally throw a successful party for Doc, the guest of honor keeps coming back to the haunting ancient poem, "Black Marigolds." In a universe that can be ruthlessly impersonal, taking away as much as it gives, it is the spirit of poetry, Steinbeck seems to be saying, that helps us share and even repair loss, linking us to one another in our tears as well as our laughter.

Great classic, easy read

Hadn't read it in forty years. Glad I read it again. Great characters and a wonderful job of conjuring up the image of cannery row in the reader's mind. Easy to see why it is a classic.

If nothing else, high school at least made me aware of the great authors and prepared me to truly enjoy them later on in life when I would appreciate them fully ;)

If you're finished with academia then read and enjoy. No pressure to read. No essays to write. Simply pure reading enjoyment.

The best thing about the book is that it is short

After a visit to the Monterey area, and having read Grapes of Wrath in my youth, I was looking forward to something similar to Grapes of Wrath in Cannery Row. Unfortunately, the book had nothing to do with the difficult life of the cannery workers and was just about a variety of local people who were just going from day to day. The best thing about the book is that it is short. Otherwise, I don't think I would have finished it.

Excellent Debut Novel

The wanderer represents an outstanding debut novel from an up and coming writer. David describes beautifully the emotions and feelings being felt by a young lost soul in the lifeless world after a devastating virus knocks mankind to its knees.

The raw emotions given to "the boy" by the author is something that the reader can relate to, raising a smile in several places, and even raised a laugh in a couple of places despite the desperate state of affairs. The awkward teenage boy moments are accurate to the point of bringing back my own embarrassing "close encounters".

In short a real page turner that has you from the first chapter, that continues to drag you in to the boys world.

A different road.

In Anderson's first novel, a young man makes his way through a post-apocalyptic world where the moral compass is lost. After years of lonely existance, his encounters with the few survivors provoke his internal conflict between the need for companionship, co-operation and mutual protection, and the fear and ultimately the violence that such an unforgiving environment exposes. Anderson's terse writing style mirrors the stripped-back priorities such a scenario demands as his central protagonist deals with the conflict between 'normality' and his new reality. An excellent first effort!

I love this book! It was a great read. Even during the slow parts the ability of the author to keep it descriptive and captivate you into wanting more and more.

I love post apocalyptic books and this was definitely right there w some of the best! I will definitely keep an eye out for new works from the Author.
