Contrived

I am a fan of all of the Pinkalicious books EXCEPT this one.

The story does not flow; it is choppy and too contrived. There seemed to be so much effort putting the environmental spin on it, that it destroyed the story. There was a great deal of potential but Emeraldalicious fell flat.

Not my favorite Pinkalicious book

My whole family likes the Pinkalicious series of books but this one is probably my least favorite. The story is just weird- basically Pinkalicious and Peter play in trash and have a magic wand that makes things out of the trash and grants their wishes. My daughter likes it well enough but it's just an odd storyline to me. It's somewhat different from the rest of the Pinkalicious books (not in a good way). In hindsight, I would pass on this one.

This was such a fun book to add to my collection and now I hope to own all of the `licious books.

"Television, towel, and a tassel. I'm a prince who loves his castle. Please make me one without a hassle!"
This book is about a little girl who thinks she is a princess and has a very big imagination. Her brother and she are on a walk when she falls and breaks her tiara and wand. They make a new one out of flowers and vines. Suddenly the wand flies away. They stumble upon an area that is covered in garbage and a tree that is dying. With a little bit of magic, they turn the garbage into stuff that a princess would have, like a throne, and then with a wave of her wand, flowers started growing where it was clean. She uses the garbage to make other items for her brother and her.

This book was so colorful and the castle made out of garbage was excellent as you could see all of the different items used, like spoons and cups. If you haven't read this book before, don't wait any longer!

About the Author
After the first book appeared in 1880, Joel Chandler Harris was deluged with letters from readers all over the country asking for more stories of Brer Rabbit and his friends--so for the remaining years of his life he collected and wrote them. Richard Chase, noted folklorist and author of Jack Tales and Grandfather Tales, compiled and edited the volume after Harris s death, and his occasional footnotes and word definitions contribute to our understanding of the dialect. Chase s belief in the importance of folktales and Harris s work is summed up in his foreword: "These tales grew up in the soil of our nation. They came from the soul of a people. They endure."

Try to view this from a historical perspective, relative to the times, locale and culture. It is narrow minded to lift this work from its own time and "transplant" it into today's culture.'

Maybe if you read this with more of an open mind and attempted to transpose yourself into the culture of the book's time ( rather than vice versa) you might see more value whether as a positive or negative example.

Children from any locale can benefit if a work helps them to be more open minded and hopefully understand the REASON why they need to be more sensitive and questioning.

Back to the days of minstrel shows and blackface...but without any context

This is one of the many books, such as "Little Black Sambo" that many (white) adults have fond memories of, and most black people find deeply offensive. While many might feel that the characters could "be of any race" and that "it teaches children important lessons" and the the story is "beautiful and touching," I feel that it does perpetuate racism and stereotypes -- both overtly and in more subtle ways.

"Dar wuz dis sum pepuz who wuz settin, an dey wuz axin bawt dis mawnin, low dat dey waz tard. Dey kep runnin way fer ter fer home, sot dar wunner nudder, an de wuz gwine fas. Twel bimeby wuz atter fer ter ketch, bless grashus, hit wuz down ter dis day, an duh bimeby dey, gwineter git fer ter tell, deze yer, dish yer, an fer ter git, dey wuz dere an gun ter."

What important lesson does this teach young children? How could this apply to upper-middle income children in Marin, Westchester, or Cook Counties?

A Mind-bending journey featuring exquisitely presented logic and philosophy

"The Art of Knowing" by Mr. Langan is far more than a guide to learning techniques. The author directly examines the issue of determinism vs. free will, a long standing question, in an intriguing way. Free will connects with the challenge of understanding the Mind, and Mr. Langan is keen to argue that modern science is not complete without a fully developed concept of Mind.

As for Mind and a grand theory of its workings, this has also intrigued Freeman Dyson. He has an extended discussion of Mind in several of his 1970s and 1980s books. Mr. Langan's Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe (CTMU) may have some features in common with Dyson's views about Mind, which would be saying a lot, given Dyson's stellar accomplishments. Though Dyson's artistic and literary writings are on the edge of conventional science, a recent biography about him by Schewe shows how close Dyson was to a Nobel Prize, among the many other intriguing and advanced aspects of his long life, research, and writing.

On the other hand, some scientists have said that complex living beings can never fully understand the workings of their mind or Mind in the abstract. In this case, Langan's goal for complete understanding of consciousness would be a bridge too far. Yet other books, including "How Math Explains the World" by Prof. James D. Stein, demonstrate that working on an impossible problem can -- and often does -- yield valuable results in other areas. Even if the challenge is ultimately impossible, it is still worth taking on.

In addition, Mr. Langan's pursuit of a theory of Mind that would be part of science may be related to the Anthropic Principle, even though the author probably goes further in his claims than the Anthropic Principle when he invokes theology. An extended and well-credentialed exploration of the Anthropic Principle can be found in "The Anthropic Cosmological Principle" by John D. Barrow, Frank J. Tipler, and John A. Wheeler. From the Amazon publisher's introduction, I quote: "this collection of ideas holds that the existence of intelligent observers determines the fundamental structure of the Universe. In its most radical version, the Anthropic Principle asserts that "intelligent information-processing must come into existence in the Universe, and once it comes into existence, it will never die out." "

I enjoyed the creative approach that Langan applies to each chapter / challenge. From free will to ethics to applied ethics in politics and the biosphere, to clash of civilizations discussions and the need for tolerance, this book has an incredible scope. I will be looking forward to new books from Langan.

Confession of a page-skipper

I have to admit that I am the type of reader who will often figure out where the story is going half way through and skip ahead to see if I'm right. I've been trying to break the habit for years, and I'm happy to say that this time around I didn't skip a single page. I honestly had no idea where this wacky, fast-paced plot was going to go next. If you appreciate quirky humor and unexpected twists, this book will keep you up late into the night.

Holy moly!!

I almost peed myself reading this book. It was so funny and really weird. Lol. Please let me be your bff. I am always reading something, the back of someone's pant, their shoes and I have to say, this is probably, without a doubt, one of the funniest books I have read in a long time. The characters are wild and slightly, well, maybe a lot crazy. And the book has a great plot, or maybe a crazy plot. Gosh, I feel like I am nuts after reading it. Please, read this. I guarantee you will feel the same way. But, remember to take your Prozac afterwards.
