What happens to a family when a member's mind is uploaded to a computer? Williams' novelette explores this question with touching humor and through both light and dark fantasy. The opening of the story is very strong, especially for readers who loved Baum's Oz books. In contrast to much science fiction, this brief tale is character-driven. Well edited, well formatted, and well written, this prize-winning tale takes less than an hour to read.

Daddy's World by Walter Jon Williams

This is a short story.Probably somewhere around twenty to thirty pages. But it's really good as a short story and entertaining. It's also thought provoking. It asks some simple questions, which may or may not come up in the future.

Jamie lives in an idealistic life, which sounds like it's out of some children s novel. It's peopled with characters that could only live in books. But Jamie's Mom and Dad are there and so is his sister Becky. His days are simple filled with time to play but also time to learn.

Until one day when everyone seems to freeze. Stranger things happen where he sees parts of a person and hears a voice. This is the first indicator that things are not as they seem, which is actually pretty much a relief because this was reading too much like a children's tale.

Soon his sister makes a suggestion that they play matchmaker between Don Quixote and Princess Gigunda by deceiving Don into believing that Gigunda is really Dulcinea who, of course, Don Quixote loves. This antic heralds in a time when Becky, who is younger, starts to age faster than Jamie. This perplexes him but he's not ready to face what is happening.

As with short stories this becomes difficult to review because it's so short and a person doesn't want to give the whole story away.

This story is almost a cautionary tale. A modern fairy tale or fable. With the what if being what if we could download the mind of someone we love, who is dying, into a computer. It takes time to examine the ethics and legality of letting someone have that much control over your mind when you pass from this earth.

There are consequences as the conditions lasts longer than originally planned and eventually Becky, who has to live in both a real and fantasy world is a catalyst to Jamie gaining back more control of his life. But, just how will that work out for any of them.

You will have to read and see.

This short is a good introduction to the mind of Walter Jon Williams and his world building. I personally recommend his Implied Spaces novel as another good starting point.

Good Thought provoking SSF for all Future of the digital age related Science Fiction lovers.

Wonderful story with great bones that could easily be developed into a part of a larger piece. Stands on its own merits, but leaves you wanting more depth, not always a bad thing.

The Celebrity Supernatural Series came about when I tried to write a holiday newsletter one Christmas for my friends.   As much as I tried to craft a chatty and factual report of the year just passed, I couldn't help making up stuff about real people.  And so, finally, in desperation of ever getting the thing out before my youngest made me a grandmother, I decided to abandon all pretense of writing non-fiction, and do what I do best...write stories.  I sent it around and everyone liked it so  much, I submitted it to New Witch Magazine.  Its first printing was the 2005 Beltane issue.   When my friend and publisher Patrice Fitzgerald approached me about making it available in e-format, I jumped at the chance, and a whole new world of possibilities opened up...

Fun Read

I really enjoyed this fun, interesting read. The writing was great and the imagery was vivid. Anne creates realistic and relatable characters. I could easily picture each one, it was like I already knew them. She also made me care about them, which I believe is the mark of a truly good short story considering there isn't a lot of time for character development. She makes an unlikely situation plausible and entertaining. Who wouldn't want to conjure Johnny Depp? Highly recommended.

Full disclosure: I know Annie Kelleher. However, I'd read none of her work before now. And while I have to admit the premise seemed a bit of a stretch, I also have to say I read the story in one sitting and will read it again. After hooking us by developing characters that feel like people, rather than types (no mean feat for a short story), Annie puts those characters in a set of circumstance that seem impossible to be resolved -- but beg to be. And after making us realize there's a very canny imagination at work here, Annie makes it impossible to NOT want to know how the story ends. As a writer, I felt myself taking the measure of my own imagination while reading the work of Annie's. Bottom line? Though bowling can trace its beginnings in this country to the time of the earliest colonists in Massachusetts, it wasn’t until the last decade that the sport began to boom. A number of events triggered its rebirth. The first was the introduction, in 1952, of the American Machine & Foundry Company’s Automatic Pinspotter—the remarkable device that resets the pins, announces which ones are knocked down and returns the ball—all automatically. By replacing the often unreliable pinboy, it thereby made bowling an attractive investment for the entrepreneur. Million dollar bowling centers began to spring up in every section of the country.

And people were waiting for these centers because another factor had whetted their appetite for the sport. That was television. The type of competition bowling offers lends itself remarkably well to TV. Scores and scores of locally originated television programs as well as several full network productions introduced bowling to millions upon millions of Americans who had never been exposed to the fun of knocking down the stubborn tenpins.

Today, nearly thirty million Americans bowl regularly. Of these, approximately ten million are women; one and a half million are children. And there are more than a million new bowlers who take up the sport each year.

Bowling knows no bounds; anyone, at any stage of life, can become its devotee. The handicapped, sometimes even the blind, find fun in the sport. It can be played at any time of the day or night, at any time of the year, and in every section of the country. No other sport qualifies as well for a claim to the title of “national pastime.”

The author of this book, “Bowling Schoolmaster” Frank Clause, has been part and parcel of bowling’s boom for the past five years, and has been a familiar figure on the bowling scene for the last two decades. He comes by his title—”The Bowling Schoolmaster”—quite naturally. Before becoming a professional star, he taught history and English for twenty-three years at the Old Forge High School in Pennsylvania. Today he is recognized as the best bowling instructor in the United States.

His syndicated column, “Tenpin Tips,” appears in a long list of daily newspapers from coast to coast. He conducts “Free Bowling Clinics,” slide programs, and the Bowling Primer for American Machine & Foundry Company through¬out the year in every section of the country, traveling a quarter of a million miles each year in this endeavor. Instructional motion pictures starring Mr. Clause are syndicated on television and circulated in schools. He serves, too, as the instructors’ instructor in nationwide programs. Actually, his great talents as an instructor overshadow his bowling accomplishments—and yet he holds a number of enviable records. A spot bowler, who uses a four-step approach, he holds a lifetime average of 207; and in the 1955-1956 season he ranked among the best in the nation, with a 224 season average.

Ever try for a perfect game? Well, Frank has eleven of them, all ABC sanctioned—a figure that ranks him third on the all-time listing of perfect-game bowlers.

Frank’s greatest bowling exploits have been on television. In 1960 he became the sport’s highest money winner, with some TV sharp-shooting which netted him more than $70,000. Twice he broke the jackpot on Milton Berle’s “Jackpot Bowling” program to the delight of millions of televiewers, and the Internal Revenue Department. He cracked the first jackpot—for $26,000—on February 12, and the second one for $41,000 on October 10. Nothing like the books. It was like a snippet from a larger story; well-written but not enough there to make it worth money. So because it cost so much for a not-story, I gave it 3 stars. Too bad, I really liked the books.

This was just okay. As has been said before it is really just a short story in the universe of The Forest of Hands and Teeth. It isn't super special and is short enough that I would have rather paid $.99 for it.

Aside from a number of typos and grammatical errors in the Kindle version, the book is written in an easy to read, conversational style and covers a lot of material in a general way. Unfortunately, it winds up being a repetitive advertisement for a start-up package the author sells for $199 as of this review; the details you really need are only available in it.
